For me, Piney Lake is one of those places.

I have been visiting Piney Lake for decades. Over the years, I have shared it with friends, family, and, of course, my dogs. Whether hiking beside the lake, taking in the magnificent views of the Gore Range, or simply enjoying the peacefulness that surrounds you when you arrive, Piney has always felt special.

That is why the recent news about Piney River Ranch is so difficult to hear.

The End of an Era

Piney River Ranch has announced that the 2026 summer season will be its final season under its current operators. General Manager Monique Busold and Piney River Ranch LLC were unable to reach an agreement with Denver Water, which owns the land, to extend their long-term lease.

The current lease does not officially expire until March 1, 2027, but because the ranch does not operate during the winter, its operations are expected to conclude on September 26, 2026. All weddings and events already scheduled for this summer are expected to continue as planned.

For the past 15 years, Monique and her team have helped make Piney River Ranch a place where countless people have celebrated weddings and anniversaries, caught their first fish, paddled across the lake, stayed in cabins, enjoyed a meal, or simply spent an unforgettable day in the mountains.

It is difficult to imagine Piney Lake without the experience they have created there.

More Than a Beautiful View

Located approximately 12 miles north of Vail, Piney River Ranch sits along the shores of Piney Lake beneath the dramatic peaks of the Gore Range. Reaching it is part of the experience—a scenic drive up Red Sandstone Road that gradually leaves the busyness of everyday life behind.

Once there, visitors can hike, canoe, paddleboard, fish, ride horses, enjoy lunch overlooking the lake, or simply pause and take in one of the most beautiful settings in the Vail Valley.

What Happens Next?

The long-term future of the property remains uncertain.

Denver Water has stated that the water rights once associated with the property were retired in 2007 and that no final decision has been made regarding the ranch’s future. The utility offered a shorter extension through March 2028 while it evaluated its options, but Piney River Ranch’s operators determined that the short-term arrangement and its conditions would not provide the certainty needed to continue operating and booking future events.

My sincere hope is that whatever happens next, Piney Lake will remain accessible and that the spirit of this extraordinary place will be preserved for future generations.

While none of us knows exactly what the future holds, we do know that this is the final summer to experience Piney River Ranch as we have known it.
